Consolidating Parliamentary Democracy in the SADC Region
Tim Hughes’s research interests have focused on the formulation of South African foreign policy, democratisation and parliaments in Africa, futures scenarios, poverty studies and the Middle East.
He holds an MA in Political Studies (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town. He taught at UCT and has lectured in the US, Africa and the Middle East. He has worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation, as well as with South African trade unions and the corporate financial sector. He has completed numerous research projects ranging from futures scenarios, poverty studies including the Second Carnegie Inquiry into Poverty in South Africa, revolutions and terrorism. During 2002/03, he completed an extensive study on the formulation of South African foreign policy funded by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. He heads the research programme examining the consolidation of parliamentary democracy in the SADC region. He is based in Cape Town.
