Gail Wannenburg

Research Associate


Gail has a BA LLB from the University of Natal and is a senior researcher at Business Against Crime.

She previously lead the SAIIA’s War and Organised Crime programme, which examined the impact of organised crime on current conflicts and post-conflict reconstruction and peace-building in Africa. Gail has conducted research on issues of political conflict and organised social violence, crime and policing and post-conflict reconstruction during her work in the human rights NGO sector and at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where she had extensive links with civil society partners in Africa. She also worked within the European Union development programme in South Africa as a justice, good governance and human rights adviser.

Critical Thinking Forum

SAIIA and the Mail and Guardian newspaper recently hosted a critical thinking forum on South African trade, industrial and exchange rate policies, where Treasury DG Lesetja Kganyago gave the keynote speech. They also launched an op-eds series on trade reform in the Mail and Guardian:
