Anne Hammerstad

Research Associate Dr Anne Hammerstad is a lecturer in International Relations at the University of Kent in Canterbury, an ESRC Fellow and a SAIIA research associate. Before Kent, Dr Hammerstad was a Research and Teaching Fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Senior Researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs. At SAIIA, she ran a project on Southern African security integration and investigated the growing significance of regional organisations in dealing with Africa's conflicts and security problems. Dr Hammerstad is about to embark on an ESRC-funded research programme wich studies how ideas and beliefs about forced migration impacts on conflict and security, with particular focus on the African continent. She is currently finishing a book for Oxford University Press on 'The Rise of a Global Security Actor: The UNHCR from Northern Iraq to Darfur'. She has published articles, chapters, reports and monographs, as well as an edited volume, on the topics of SADC and regional security in Southern Africa, South Africa's role in Africa, the African Union, and the relationship between displacement, conflict and development. Her DPhil thesis from Oxford University won the British International Studies Association's Thesis Prize in 2003 as well as Oxford's own Winchester Award the same year.
