Anna Chen

Research Associate

Ying Chen (Anna) is a research associate of Center for Sociological Research at the University of Johannesburg.  Anna is completing her MBA study at the University of Witswatersrand. Her MBA research studies on challenges facing South African businesses in China. She has extensive research interests in China-Africa relations, the economic impacts of Chinese aid and investment in Africa, and Chinese living in Africa. She is also conducting researches regarding Chinese mining investments in South Africa and Southern Africa.

Anna spent almost ten years in South Africa. Her bilingual talent and experience of working for a Chinese state owned enterprise proves invaluable to her research. She initiated South Africa – China Economic & Cultural Exchange Center in 2001 and helped setting up the representative office of China Mining Association in 2003. She sits on the board of several Chinese associations and Chamber of Commerce and advises Chinese investors as well as South African businessmen on investment related issues.

Critical Thinking Forum

SAIIA and the Mail and Guardian newspaper recently hosted a critical thinking forum on South African trade, industrial and exchange rate policies, where Treasury DG Lesetja Kganyago gave the keynote speech. They also launched an op-eds series on trade reform in the Mail and Guardian:
