Media Release: South African high school learners present youth protocol at COP 17

COP 17, Durban – 18 high school learners have crafted and presented the South African Durban Youth and Children's Protocol in an effort to make their voices heard during the 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17) underway in Durban. The protocol follows an intensive year-long programme as well as a simulated youth climate negotiation that took place on the opening day of COP 17.

COP 17, Durban – On the opening day of the 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17), 18 high school learners from around South Africa, are holding their own climate negotiations. The Youth Climate Negotiation follows a year of intensive research and will simulate the formal COP discussions currently underway at the International Convention Centre in Durban.

Media Alert: SAIIA at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP 17) in Durban

Please be advised that the South African Institute of International Affairs has official observer status at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commences on Monday 28 November and ends on 9 December 2011. A number of SAIIA researchers will be following proceedings and will be available for media interviews.

Media Alert: Southern Sudan declares Independence on 9 July 2011

On Saturday, 9 July 2011, Southern Sudan will celebrate its independence from Northern Sudan. Independence for the south has wide ranging implications for the region: firstly, in terms of the impact it will have on relations with Northern Sudan and, secondly, in terms of unresolved border issues such as the disputed district of Abyei. Southern Sudan’s independence is also significant due to the challenge it presents the north and south in terms of managing its new border, and to find a deal on the export of oil from Southern Sudan through the northern pipeline and refinery infrastructures. For South Africa, which has invested heavily in peacekeeping, capacity building and mediation efforts in Sudan, independence for the south holds important implications for its foreign policy.
