The United Kingdom (UK) and South Africa (SA) share ideals in foreign and domestic policy that both countries have to live up to.

This was the message from Dame Nicole Brewer, High Commissioner to South Africa at the South African Institute of International Affairs on Monday 20, June 2011.

In her speech, entitled, “Africa in the 21st Century: the view from London”, Dame Brewer, also emphasised Africa’s emergence from a continent “painted as full of problems” to one with economies that show progress and potential.

“This is good news for Africa and the good news for South Africa, especially since the country is the gateway to the continent”, Dame Brewer says.

In establishing the main thrust of her presentation, Dame Brewer noted that “South Africa and my teenage son have between them taught me the power of football.” She descibed her aim as High Commissioner to South Africa as keeping “the relationship between the UK and SA in the Premier League.”
