Latin America
The Latin America project is one of the longest-running research projects at SAIIA, having started in 1995. It is the only project in the country that is actively researching socio-economic and political issues in Latin America. In 2004, the project undertook research on various aspects related to the proposed SACU–Mercosur free trade agreement, including an analysis on specific sectors such as textiles, clothing, leather and wine. Research focused on the current economic orthodoxy (and the associated backlash) assumed by both Latin America and Africa. Various areas of co-operation in multilateral fora (like IBSA and the G20+) have also been explored. These related projects aim to develop constructive links between Southern Africa and Mercosur and are sponsored by DaimlerChrysler.
Ongoing research on the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA), doing business in Latin America and the social and political instability in the Andean region continues. The project is also looking at Cuban foreign policy and its global integration. The work conducted in Latin America is focused on drawing parallels between Latin America and Africa in the realm of political, economic and commercial activities.
