The research agenda of the Emerging Powers programme has two focus areas:
- Regional/area studies, looking at the interaction between emerging powers and key African states, with a particular emphasis on domestic drivers of foreign policy, growing commercial and political linkages between emerging powers and Africa, the soft power infrastructure underpinning the foreign policy of emerging powers, and challenges for South Africa’s foreign policy.
- Global challenges, looking at responses to global policy issues, particularly in the areas of climate change, energy security and the G20.
The research agenda of the South African Foreign Policy and African Drivers programme includes the following:
- South African foreign policy, with a particular interest in South Africa’s capacity to act as a norm setter in the region and South Africa’s ability to partner with regional powers, as well as established and emerging powers, to pursue mutually-agreed objectives of political stability and socioeconomic development on the continent.
- Comparative foreign policy analysis, focusing on the factors shaping the foreign policy of key African states with particular reference to their engagement on the continent and with South Africa.
