Areas of Research Expertise:
-       Socio-political impact of conflict and resource extraction in Africa
-       Geopolitical and strategic issues related to African energy and mineral resources
-       Regional focus: African political dynamics and the Middle East

Background:
Petrus’ academic experiences include lecturing in Political Philosophy, Social Theory and International Relations locally in South Africa, as well as in the USA. He has worked as a consultant to companies active in Africa’s extractive sectors and conducted risk analysis studies for select clients before joining SAIIA in 2010.

He is a regular contributor to media debates on contemporary trends in African- and Middle Eastern politics, while he also maintains an active interest in the geopolitics of change in the contemporary world political-economic system.

Petrus holds a Phd in Philosophy, with a focus on political philosophy and revolutionary change, from the University of Limpopo. He also holds a Masters degree in Political Science (Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria.
