Emerging Powers & Global Challenges
SAIIA's fourth cluster looks primarily at the full spectrum of South Africa's foreign relations with Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America and key states within these regions. This cluster also covers the evolving relationship of Africa with key countries and regions in the world. The BRICSAM countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the ASEAN states and Mexico (the IBSA countries form a sub-grouping) - receive special attention. South Africa's role in shaping the emerging geo-political world order is an important sub-section of this research cluster.

Africa in a New World: Geopolitics, Interdependence and Leverage
In September 2009, as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, SAIIA hosted a conference entitled Africa in a New World: Geopolitics, Interdependence and Leverage. The event provided a platform for debate on Africa’s external relations, and included discussion on how African states should respond and adapt to the global changes and challenges.
