May 31, 2008: SAIIA Global Classrooms® Model United Nation

SAIIA UNA-USA Global Classrooms® Model UN Johannesburg 2008 Conference, Saturday 31 May

The SAIIA Global Classrooms® Model UN 2008 Conference, sponsored by internationally by Merrill Lynch, took place on Saturday 31 May at Jan Smuts and Senate House on WITS Campus. Students from 75 schools around Gauteng participated in simulations of sittings of The United Nations Security Council and Human Rights Council. The competition encouraged students to learn crucial research and presentation skills, and encouraged students from a variety of background to interact on topics of real concern in international relations.

The students participated in one of the following sessions, and the following awards were made:

SECURITY COUNCIL 1:

Topic:  Colombian Drug Crisis

Venue:  JAN SMUTS HOUSE, East Campus, University of the Witwatersrand

Best Position Paper: Venezuela (Roshnee Secondary) Honourable Mentions: United Kingdom (Pretoria Girls High), Colombia (Crawford College Lonehill) Peru (Vosloorus Comprehensive.

Best Delegation:  Venezuela (Roshnee Secondary)

2nd Best Delegation:  Colombia (Crawford College Lonehill)

3rd Best Delegation:  United Kingdom (Pretoria Girls High)

Honourable Mentions:  People’s Republic of China (King Edward VII High) and Peru (Vosloorus Comprehensive)

Best Speaker: Colombia (Crawford College Lonehill)

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL:

Topic:  Violence Against Women in Kenyan IDP Camps

Venue:  SENATE ROOM, East Campus, University of the Witwatersrand

Best Position Paper:  Egypt (De La Salle College)  Honourable Mentions: Iran (Bracken High) Tanzania (Fumana High) and Uganda (Letsibogo Secondary)

Best Delegation:  Iraq (Bracken High)

2nd Best Delegation:  France (Crawford Sandton)

3rd Best Delegation:  Congo (Bophelo Impilo Private School) Lebanon (Jeppe Boys)

Honourable Mentions: Iran (St. Mary’s Girls) Kenya (Willowmoore High)

Best Speaker:  Chad (Jeppe Girls High):
