Asia Pacific
The Asia-Pacific research project, sponsored by the Taipei Liaison Office in Johannesburg, has been running since 2000, during which time it has made a substantial contribution to enriching the debate in South Africa about policy matters relating to the Asia-Pacific; and on the relations between key countries there and South and Southern Africa.
The project has also contributed to developing local research talent on Asia-Pacific issues in Southern Africa. During 2004 the project focused on future trade relations between South Africa and Asia-Pacific countries within the context of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), economic lessons South Africa and other African countries could learn from the countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and cross-Strait economic and political relations between China and Taiwan.
